Photography Tips for Sharing Art on Instagram

We’ve gathered our top photography tips for artists, especially with Instagram in mind!

As an artist on Instagram, the photographs on your feed hold power-- your ideal client’s first impression of you and your work.

Instagram is a visual platform (which is why it works so well for visual artists!) but that also means the photography featuring you and your work is the most crucial element to successfully building a brand and marketing your work.

Take the time, make the effort — and these tips can help!

1. ONLY USE NATURAL LIGHT.

Turn off the overhead and any artificial lights. Position yourself next to natural light, or even move your photos outside if necessary.

The best days for photography are the bright, but overcast days to get even light and avoid any harsh shadows or glares.

2. USE A TRIPOD.

Professional photographers aren’t the only ones who know how useful a tripod is. Tripods are available at shockingly affordable prices (under $40!) and using one will help your photos look instantly more professional, for both cameras and smart phones.

Here are a few of our favorites (with affiliate links):

  1. Free-standing Tripod for DSLR Cameras

  2. Tabletop Tripod for Smart Phones

  3. Tripod Adaptor for Smartphone

In low-light settings tripods are especially useful because you can use a slower shutter speed to capture light and details that you wouldn’t be able to secure handheld. Say goodbye to fuzzy grey photos on cloudy days!

A tripod for your phone is great for timelapses, and recording videos for stories, too — free up your hands and create more professional looking content!

3. BATCHWORK.

While your equipment is set-up and you are in the photography mode (and when the weather is ideal)-- take a TON of photos at various angles and perspectives. Build a library of images you can refer back to on days you need content to post, but are not in the studio.

This works for images for your feed, and your Stories!

Types of images to capture:

  • Final pieces, styled in a living setting or in your work area.

  • Detailed shots of your tools and hands making work.

  • Photos of you! Headshots + in-action — put your camera/phone on self-timer (no handheld selfies!) and have a quick photoshoot!

  • Detailed shots of your work up close and personal.
