If you’re an artist, you’ve probably been told selling in galleries is the only way to be a “real artist.” Can you hear our eye roll from here??
There's no doubt that galleries have been go-to spaces for artists to showcase and sell their creations in the past. But as technology and society evolves, we're learning there's better ways to sell your artwork than through the traditional gallery route.
But first thing's first- don't listen to anybody who tries to define who you are as an artist based on what you make or how you sell it. You're an artist regardless of all that!
So while selling in galleries may work well for some artists, it’s by no means the best or only way to sell your artwork. We’ve been selling our art for 10+ years, so we’ve tried many of ways and platforms during this time. Here’s what we’ve learned:
Galleries can take up to a 50% commission on your work once it sells. So, if you price a piece of your work at $500, you would only be taking home $250. That's a lot of profit you're leaving behind!
Because you're not the one physically selling your art, it's hard to create repeat collectors through galleries. Keep in mind, without directly connecting with your buyers, you’re losing the ability to nurture that relationship and turn a one time buyer into a lifelong collector.
Unlike selling online, selling in galleries limits who you can sell to, often based on your geographical location. There are billions of people in the world, but your art is only being shown to a select few.
No one is more motivated to sell your artwork than you. You’re only one name on a roster in a gallery, but when you sell your own work directly, every effort is all about you, your work, and your sales.
